R.I.P. Om Malik ðŸ–¤

Oh my god, our Om is gone. This just hit me like a train 😢

I loved to sit down with him at South Park – he had that one bench he loved so much. And now I wish we had gone on more walks together…

He and I spoke weeks ago. I got him a special Leica edition of a new smartphone that he had been trying to get for ages being a huge Leica fan. The joy in his voice when he got it… was like gifting my 2-year-old son a new toy.

Just the most adorable human.

Also, Om was probably the best smelling human being I’ve ever been near. He wore this delicious perfume, just the right amount so you’d only catch it when you hugged him. Pretty sure it was aimed at humans of the opposite sex but it got me every time… which is why our hug count per meetup ran suspiciously high.

Gosh you will be missed, amigo 🖤

Sending you a huge hug, and a really really long one so I can take a few extra whiffs.

P.S. One of thousands of epic stories of Om’s kindness that people tell. A couple of years ago, I reached out to Om when the Vision Pro came out. I had so many things in my head that I wanted to say about it having worked in VR for so many years, so I called him because I know he loves this stuff and would be up for a chat anytime.

We talked for hours and he then encouraged me to write about it, so I did. Then I asked Om to be my editor so I could maybe post it as a public blog. He went so above and beyond in his notes and guidance — I learned a lot about writing through that episode alone. I wrote the piece, I published it but I told him I was just going to leave it there and not do anything about it because it wasn’t good enough. He disagreed and said it was good enough and had a few important original points that he thought needed to be said, and then without even asking me (because I would have said no), he went ahead and posted a link on his newsletter, and suddenly thousands of people were reading it.

I remember the day when I woke up to a ton of messages from people who really loved it. That whole article went on to become a big deal for me personally, and it lifted my spirits at a time when I was not feeling the happiest and figuring out what to work on next. Om energized me in the most incredible way, and in many ways that pushed me to start building again and I started working hard on a startup idea which eventually became Dreamer.
